What is the Conservatory's teaching philosophy?
Each student should enjoy the evolving process of learning to play the piano at all levels of ability. The faculty facilitates the students' independent approach to problem solving. Over time, this self-motivating strategy develops a personal discipline (that branch out into their other studies). Every lesson consistently tweaks a student's short- and long-term goals, thus creating a personal curriculum that effectively addresses their unique strengths and weaknesses.
What "method" or "method books" does the Conservatory use to teach?
Most often, we use "method books" only when working with beginning students. Our primary teaching focus is that the student understands specific concepts about the music and the piano. Our preference is to move out of method books and into standard repertoire as soon as the student is able.
What are the requirements for a student to study at the Conservatory?
The most important requirement for students of all levels is:
1) To maintain a consistent practice schedule (appropriate to their repertoire leve), and 2) that a process is in place to follow the teacher's instructions for each lesson.
Faculty members are acutely aware of the degree of improvement at every lesson, so all assignments are made based on this expectation. (If these directions are not earnestly followed, the student's progress will, obviously, proceed at a slower pace.)
What music teachers organizations are the Conservatory associated?
We are members of the following:
1) Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) www.MTNA.org,
2) Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) www.TMTA.org, and the
3) Dallas Music Teachers Association (DMTA) www.DallasMTA.org.
The Dallas Music Teachers Association is one of the largest and most active in the United States. The Conservatory students selectively participate in the many exceptional competitions, festivals and events sponsored by these music organizations as well as other independent competitions.
In addition, Dr. Lin is a certified examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music/Music Development Program for the United States and has conducted more than 2500 online exams. For further information regarding the RCM program, please visit their website at: www.musicdevelopmentprogram.org
When are lessons scheduled at the Conservatory?
Lessons are primarily scheduled after school hours Monday-Thursday. Fridays and weekend lessons are a less desirable option due to conflicts with students' participation in sports events, out-of-town trips, etc. This schedule avoids problems rescheduling these missed lessons.
What are the audition requirements and when are they held?
There are no specific audition requirements, but a personal interview is required of each student before being accepted at the Conservatory (even beginners). If possible, our preference is to prepare one or two works (complete or partial) so we can effectively observe a student's strengths and weaknesses from the outset. Auditions are scheduled at a mutually convenient time, so please contact us to set up an appointment.
What is the tuition policy of the Conservatory?
Tuition is based on the enrollment for the full school year, and is divided into monthly payments. A complete copy of our studio policy is available at the personal interview.
